-Home Economics

Yesterday in Home Economics we made Truffles. My group wanted Cranberries in ours. This will be the last time I have Home Economics for the rest of the year.

Home Economics was interesting for me. I loved doing the Theory lessons but not really the Practical part. I guess I'd rather be typing away in a classroom then making many different interesting foods. Miss Rhodes was one of my favorite teachers this semester. I swear she knows everything about Vitamins and Nutrients. She always has a joke up her sleeve and is just generally an amazing teacher. Thank you Miss Rhodes!

I'm not doing Home Economics next year but I'll most likely do it again in year eleven.

Thanks for a great semester in Home Economics!

-Forensics -Hit and Run Diorama

Recently in Forensics we have been making a crime scene. For some reason I can't upload my presentation, So you won't be able to see my groups work.

We made a diorama. A diorama is usually made out of a cardboard box with 3D cutouts of objects. Ours included a road, a forest and the background as a cloudy sky. Lying face down is a barbie who was hit by a car. (Please note that the redness with the hole on her forehead is a gash and not a bullet wound)

I didn't really do much to help with this project except paint the back clouds and write a short story about the murder but it was an easy and enjoyable project.

-Holiday Writing

I lay on a branch. I was watching the dark cold trees, They were glistening with melting snow. The moon was reflecting off the shiny trees. A small cottage lay in the snow. Snow was fluttering down onto the roof. Puffy smoke was coming out of the chimney. Snow was packed into the forest floor. The light from inside the cottage was pouring onto the cold white snow.

The owner of this cottage had long white silky hair. They fluttered as the wind carried them around the forest. They were visible through the foggy window. It looked like they were cleaning something.

There was all of a sudden a big groaning creaky noise coming from outside. It looked like a tree was falling. One of the big ones as well. That's not good. I quickly jumped down from the branch. The tree was falling even faster. The groaning noise increased; It was nearly reaching the ground!

Until...

The person who was inside quickly rushed out of the cottage. Time froze slowly as the tree slid back to where it originally was. Blue dust was floating everywhere; I looked back at the tree then the person. I was insanely confused.

This was a confusing day. I'm going back to sleep.

-How My Year Went.

This year has been an amazing opportunity for me. I've made many great long lasting friends and meet some amazing people. The teachers have taught me many different things and have been really kind towards me. At the start of the year I was very lost. When I first arrived at Hornby, I came in the gate, Headed towards where I saw a massive group of people and tried to fit in among them. I later learned that they were all year nines. I only knew a couple people from my previous schools so I joined them.

Then I had the trouble of finding my class. This was difficult. I don't remember who, But one of the Principals found me and showed me my class. This is where I meet Miss Birtch. She was one of the most helpful teachers when I started at Hornby. She helped me make new friends and introduced me to different things. It will be very interesting to see where I will get without Miss Birtch.

Throughout the year, My education has increased while being at Hornby. I've been taught many different techniques by many different teachers and staff. It has been an amazing experience in year nine and I'm forever grateful to the amazing people who helped make 2021 an amazing year. I'm really looking forward to 2022 because I''m excited to meet more people and prepare for NCEA in year eleven.

-Business and Enterprise

This is my Business and Enterprise work from this morning. I've really enjoyed doing it so far and I hope that my group will be successful on the day. We have already finished the planning and now we just have to make our product. We're hoping to raise over 50 dollars for funding for school trips and equipment that we need around the school.

-Forensics

-What does a Forensic Scientist do?

Forensic Scientists apply Scientific knowledge and skills to investigating Crimes and helping the Police find or eliminate Crime Suspects. They may also do research into developing or improving Forensic Techniques.

-What types of evidence do they collect from crime scenes?

The evidence they collect is very important to the whole Crime Scene. They could collect almost anything from a Crime Scene, Some types of evidence that can be collected are: Weapons, Fibers, Cells, CCTV, DNA. They can Analyse Substances such as Glass, Paint, Fire Debris and fibers which can provide crucial evidence in a case. This kind of Non-Biological evidence can provide vital links between the Victim, Suspect and Crime Scene.

-What is Genetic Profiling?

Information about specific genes, including Variations and Gene Expression, in an individual or in a certain type of Tissue. A Genetic Profile may be used to help Diagnose a Disease or learn how the Disease may progress or respond to treatment with Drugs or Radiation.

-What are some of the jobs?

-Forensic Anthropologist

Forensic Anthropology is a special sub-field of Physical Anthropology (the study of human remains) that involves applying Skeletal Analysis and techniques in Archaeology to solving Criminal Cases. Forensic anthropologists specialize in analyzing hard tissues such as bones.

-Forensic Psychologist

Forensic Psychologists help Police Officers close cases by explaining what kind of a person would be most likely to commit a certain type of Crime and what their background could be like. Forensic Psychologists also help the Court System by assessing or Diagnosing people being Suspected of Committing a Crime.

-100 Word Challenge

The cool shining water was swallowing people as they dived into the water. Screams could be heard as tiny kids flew down the hydro-slide. The lifeguards were slowly heating up because of the sun. The sun was a bright yellow, Almost white. Whistles could be heard loud and clear as kids sprinted down the sidewalk. Changing room doors slammed because people were mindlessly wandering out. Parents were sighing as their kids slipped over. The water was cooling down furiously hot people.

Yesterday in English we had to search up and find the meaning of some words. We were meant to do five words off the sheet but I didn't have enough time to write them all.

Here's my work:

Metamorphosis

The Caterpillar went through a METAMORPHOSIS.

Nepotism

There should be no NEPOTISM in Politics.

Jeopardy

The court case was in JEOPARDY.

-House Blog -Science and Maths

Recently in Maths and Science, we have been studying OHM’S Law. The purpose of this is to understand the concept of Electricity and Voltage. I chose House A and 7 Bulbs for each room.

For the calculations I measured the diameter of the whole house; and then each room and then I times it together.

The whole diameter of the house was: 15m x 10m.

I can’t show any photos because I don’t have any.

Voltage: a force difference expressed in volts.

Current: How quickly the electrons move around a circuit.

Resistance: It pushes back against the current.

If we were to do it again I would choose a harder house and then maybe make more rooms. I would also change the amount of bulbs I chose. I enjoyed doing this project because it was entertaining and enjoyable.

-Health -Vaping Games

Recently in Health we have been doing some tasks about vaping. I'm sure most people know what vaping is so I'm not going to explain it. My group decided to recreate the 5 Second Rule game. How you play this is, Someone picks up a card and then they read the question, And then once their finished reading they start the timer. The person who the card was read to has to answer the question in 5 seconds. If the question was answered correctly the person gets to move forward on the board. If incorrect, They stay where they are.

The first board we made looked messy so I decided to redo it. It looked more clean and simple. One thing I would do differently is I would find more questions and make them more understandable. We were originally going to do The Game Of Life... I still have no clue why we didn't. When we played the game with other classmates it didn't really go well because the questions were a bit complicated. One of the questions were 'What is inside a Vape?' Not many people would know the answer to a question like that. If it were something like 'What is inside a Vape? Then have a few answers to go with it it might be easier.

Overall making this game and being able to play it was quite fun and enjoyable. It was a great experience being able to make a game and still get some knowledge from it.

-English -Semicolon

Yesterday and today in English we have been looking at the use of Punctuation in our writing.

Here's my writing,

“You are looking in the wrong direction,” The detective said. His favorite old televisions shows are “I Love Lucy,” “Batman,” and “Bonanza”

“If you want to go outside,” Said Mrs. Clark “You must wear your raincoats”

“Yes, it’s an important clue,” replied Vance “But more important is the time of the call”

“Rarely,” the doctor observed “Has anyone survived such a fall”

At camp we sang “ Daisy, Daisy,” “Oh Susanna,” And “Skip to My Lou” My favorite Christmas Carol is “Silent Night”

The Poem he chose to read was “Ode to a Grecian Urn”  -Correct

The title of the next chapter is “Tough Luck”

“Have Funds, Will Travel” was the most useful article in the newspaper -Correct

Michael Jackson’s song “Thriller” was a hit in the 1980’s “Earthquake Terror” is a story in our reading textbook

“King Midas and the Golden Touch” is one of the myths in our textbook.

The Beatles “Can’t Buy Me Love” hit the top of the song chart when it came out.

-Electricity

In science we have been learning about electricity. This is a split circuit.

A Current is how quickly the Electrons move. It's measured in Amps.
Symbol: I

Definition Of Voltage: It's how much energy the electrons are carrying, It's measured in Volts.
Symbol: V

Definition of Resistance: It's used to slow/resist flow of Electrons (Current) It's Measured in OHMS.
Symbol: R

-Financial Literacy

In Wananga we started doing Financial Literacy. We learning about it because at the end of the term we're doing a market day. I'm excited for this as I've done something similar in the past.

-Home Economics

On Tuesday we made Vegetarian Nachos. Unfortunately mine slid off the plate and onto the floor so I didn't get to try any. This was the last time we'll be cooking for the rest of the term. I couldn't find the recipe so I just googled one similar.

Here's the recipe:

  • 1 brown onion, grated
  • 2 carrots, peeled and grated
  • 1 capsicum, core and seeds removed and finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon Mexican spice mix
  • 1 can mild chilli beans
  • 1 carton chopped tomatoes

-Electricity

Recently we have been learning about Electricity.

The Parts My Circuit has.

It has a Battery, Wires and a Light Bulb.

What each part does.

The Battery gives the energy, The Wires pass it around, and the Light Bulb lights up because of the energy coming from the Battery.

What is Voltage?

Voltage is the pressure from a circuit's power source that pushes charged electrons (current) through a conducting loop, enabling the circuit to work.

What is a current?

A flow of Electricity which results from the ordered direction of Electrically charged Particles.

The Website used to make the circuit: (Click Here)

-The Cay -English Novel Study Book Review

Yesterday we finished reading The Cay. I found it interesting as I've read stuff similar to it before. One thing I liked most about it was Phillip's braveness. He never gave up even after Timothy died. He would still provide Fish, Langosta and other stuff. He also managed to dive down completely to catch Langosta.

I would recommend this book for people aged 12 and up because it has some stuff in it that young kids may not understand.

Overall The Cay is an amazing book and I really enjoyed doing the tasks.

-Self Reflection

 CARR Values

Commitment: I was committed to doing my work in most of my classes.

Achievement: I achieved my learning.

Resilience: I have shown some Resilience in my learning.

Respect: I respected other students.

In my Arts Kete we have been learning about Stencils and different ways to paint them. I’ve done a few small anchors. It's been really fun and interesting.

Self Reflection

On Tuesday in Math, I wasn't really into it but I've realized my mistakes. Mondays Math was good, We had Miss Hinsen* and our class went well.

Nexts Weeks Goals

A goal for next week is to have a fresh mindset and to finish my work a bit more quicker.

-Energy Transitions

-Home Economics

Last week in Home Economics we made a open steak sandwich. I didn't like it because I wasn't feeling to well.

Here's the ingredients:

  • Beef Schnitzel-  trimmed, about 1 cm thickness (can be shredded & marinated before cooking)

  • Oil (for cooking meat)

  • 4 Bread rolls or 1 ciabatta loaf, cut into 4 pieces

  • Sauces - own choice

  • Lettuce, Spinach

  • Tomatoes, sliced

  • Red Onion rings

  • Cheese slices

  • Avocado

  • 1. Quickly pan fry the meat over a medium high heat until just cooked, turning once during cooking. Allow to rest for 5 minutes. Serve as a piece or shredded

  • 2. Cut rolls or ciabatta loaf pieces in half. These can be warmed or toasted if desired.

  • Spread the tops and the bottoms of the bread with mayonnaise and /or sauces chosen

  • 3. Top half the bread with lettuce etc, tomato slices, steak and any other ingredients

  • 4. Cover with the remaining bread pieces

  • 5. Serve

-The Cay

This is my book cover for last weeks work in English, I don't really like the way it turned out, but I don't mind it. I chose the waves because if the Hurricane that took place. The boat symbolizes the boat called the Hato that sunk. Then there is the cay in the background. The reason why its sunny is because of when the Hurricane was half done there was a calm eye.

-Cooking At Home

For Home Economics I’ve decided to make something simple, sugar cookies. Sugar cookies are very easy to make and don't have a lot of confusing steps or ingredients. The ingredients include:
2 ¾ cups of all purpose flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
½ teaspoon of baking powder
1 cup of softened butter
1 egg
1 ½ cups of white sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional, it won’t change the taste)

The steps are very simple and straightforward.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C)

In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda and baking powder. Set aside

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla, (if used)

Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough is formed. Roll rounded balls of dough onto ungreased cookie sheets (or baking paper)

Bake for 8-10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown. Let stand for a few minutes before carefully transferring to a wire rack

Serve and enjoy :)

I forgot to take pictures in between.

-100 Word Challange- Week 3

Water was glistening as the Imp slowly waded through the water. It was very sunny and everytime a wave came the Imp could taste a mix between salt and sweat. The glowing goddesses were gliding through the air at the land waiting for the Imp to reach her. Her golden hair that seemed to glow was flowing around her as the wind guided dirt and leaves to surround her. She did not bear a name, as she was too beautiful to even be called something.

The Imp had finally made its way towards the goddess, salt water dripping from its skin. Its skin was a pasty red and there were bite marks all over its legs, being from Hell has got to pay for something. The goddesses were from Heaven, so it was an odd request to meet up with creatures from Hell. The goddesses did not know, but the Imp was holding a flaming sword but from the fire of Hell. The Imp turned and dashed to the goddesses and before she knew what was happening she was impaled from the upper back through her heart and out of her stomach. It was a fatal stab wound but before she could pass through she fell into the glistening cold water flowing away forever.

(Imps are often described as troublesome and mischievous more than seriously threatening or dangerous, and as lesser beings rather than more important supernatural beings. The attendants of the devil are sometimes described as imps. They are usually described as lively and small stature.) -Google description-
